Details
This antique oil on board painting, signed and dated by the artist V. Moreau (1892), depicts two expressive dogs in a snow-dusted courtyard—one in a royal blue coat, the other on a lead—capturing a scene that feels both charming and quietly cinematic. The original French title, Le Chien du Pauvette et Le Chien au Richier (“The Dog of Poverty and The Dog of Wealth”), adds a layer of narrative wit: the scruffy pup, one paw lifted meets the gaze of his refined companion, whose stance carries an air of dignified disapproval. It’s a piece that’s small in scale but full of soul—ideal for layering on a kitchen counter, resting on a shelf, or adding warmth and narrative to a powder room or gallery wall. One of my personal favorites from this trip.
Origin
France, dated 1892
Condition
Good antique condition with minor surface wear and age-related patina. Oil on board showing natural craquelure and areas of finish variation, all consistent with age. Gilt frame displays edge wear and tonal shifts that add to its timeworn charm.
