Details

This antique French cider jug dates to the 1800s and was hand-thrown in traditional stoneware, with a generous rounded form and sturdy looped handle. Its sharply angled spout and pronounced ribbing along the lower half reflect classic utilitarian design, while the glaze—layered in golden ochre, burnt umber, and deep earthen brown—shows expressive drips, speckling, and natural tonal variation.

Originally used for storing or serving cider, the jug now functions as a sculptural decorative accent with quiet rustic charm. A vertical crack extends upward from the base, visible both inside and out, though the piece remains stable and full of character. Shown styled on open shelving in our kitchen. Suited for dry display only.

Origin

France, 19th century

Condition

Visible age-related wear, including firing irregularities, glaze variation, and areas of surface abrasion. One long, age-related hairline crack appears to extend from the base upward and is faintly visible on the interior—however, the piece remains structurally stable and sound. Not recommended for use with liquids.
