Details

This antique hand-thrown bowl, known as a pendriale, was crafted in the southern Italian town of Grottaglie—an area renowned for its ceramic heritage. Likely dating to the late 1800s, it was originally used as a wash basin, often for fruit or vegetables. Its exterior remains unglazed in a warm natural terracotta, while the interior is finished in a softly crackled buttermilk glaze.

The bowl features classic signs of age: uneven shaping, worn patches in the glaze, and a subtle asymmetry that reflect its handmade origin. It’s both functional and sculptural—beautiful displayed flat on a table or shelf. The underside includes a pair of pierced holes near the rim, suggesting it was once hung decoratively in a kitchen or courtyard.

Origin

Italy, late 19th century

Condition

Good antique condition. Glaze variation, surface wear, and natural irregularities typical of traditional terracotta. Structurally sound and full of character, with subtle asymmetry and surface history that speak to its use and age.
