Details
Traditionally known as a “cat,” this Victorian-era object was designed to support bowls, pots, or baskets on uneven surfaces. Its whimsical nickname comes from the six-legged form, said to “always land on its feet” like a cat. Crafted from lignum vitae—a dense, oily hardwood prized for its durability and luster—it features six turned legs radiating from a central orb, giving it a sculptural, star-like silhouette. The richly toned wood shows beautiful variation and patina, with a few small areas of natural wear. Though no longer used for warming plates or holding vessels, it now makes a conversation-starting decorative object layered onto a shelf or tabletop.
Origin
Europe, 19th century
Condition
Good antique condition with expected surface wear and minor finish variation. Tonal shifts and small marks present throughout, consistent with age and material.
