An antique folk art mirror featuring a dark wood frame constructed from layered, grooved strips with decorative notched ends. Each corner is accented by a diagonal crossed wood element centered with a small ivory-toned domed cabochon. A narrow gilt-toned inner molding provides contrast to the dark frame.
The frame has been professionally fitted with a new antiqued mirror plate, showing scattered spotting, subtle surface variation, and very minor surface scratching.
The combination of geometric woodwork, distinctive corner details, and warm gilt accents gives this piece its character.
Origin
Late 19th to early 20th century.
Condition
Antique condition consistent with age. The dark wood frame shows surface wear, scratches, abrasions, finish variation, and scattered chips and losses, particularly along the projecting and notched ends. Three of the four diagonal corner accents have some rotational movement but remain in place when positioned. The main frame is structurally secure.
The newly installed antiqued mirror plate shows scattered spotting, subtle surface variation, and very minor surface scratching. The gilt-toned inner molding shows wear and finish variation. The ivory-toned cabochons show discoloration and surface wear. The reverse has newly installed backing and hanging wire.
