Details
This small 19th-century mirror combines intricate chip-carved detailing with velvet cushion panels in rust and aged olive green. The carving retains its original dark finish with a natural, undisturbed patina. The velvet shows the soft wear, tonal variation, and fading expected of early textile work, all of which contribute to the mirror’s charm and rarity.
The scale makes it especially versatile—striking on its own, layered on a mantel, or incorporated into a collected wall arrangement.
Origin
England, circa 1870
Condition
Good antique condition consistent with age. Velvet shows expected wear, fading, and tonal variation; the carved wood frame has natural surface irregularities from historic workmanship. One small area of velvet loss is present on an upper panel (photographed clearly) and doesn’t detract from the piece’s overall presence. The mirror plate is a later replacement. Backing paper remains intact and stable, and the piece hangs securely from the existing wire.
