Details

This early 20th-century ceramic plate is a traditional example of Korond-style folk pottery from Transylvania—known for its expressive use of color and hand-painted ornamentation. The plate features a central peacock surrounded by a rhythmic border of tulip-like flowers and foliage in deep green, blue, and terracotta hues, all outlined in bold black.

Likely produced for both functional and decorative purposes, the piece is finished in a glossy glaze with visible craquelure and firing specks. At over 13 inches in diameter, it makes a striking statement whether mounted on a wall or styled upright on a shelf.

Origin

Hungary, circa 1900

Condition

Surface wear, glaze variation, and minor firing irregularities typical of handcrafted folk ceramics from the period. A couple of small glaze flakes and additional wear along the rim. Stable and displays beautifully.
